Company:
Burlen Fuel Systems – Salisbury (http://www.burlen.co.uk)
Business:
Burlen Fuel Systems are the only manufacturer of genuine SU, Amal and Zenith carburetters, pumps and parts in the World. They also
supply Weber carburetters and parts.
Problem:
Burlen has a large and complex product line ranging back to pre second world war vehicle carburetters. When their previous web site
was designed many years ago it incorporated data driven pages but Burlen Fuel Systems could not manage this data themselves, this
meant any changes to the data were handled by the original design company at extra expense. This resulted in ineffective use of the
website due to out of date products and prices which reduced potential sales via the World Wide Web. Also, the lack of secure
payment options reduced the total number of online transactions.
Description of Requirements:
Re-development of existing e-Commerce Website to provide Burlen Fuel Systems with complete control over the content and products
within their web site, this included a re-design of the visual interface, the supporting database and web site business logic.
Solution:
Sourcewrite developed a bespoke Parts and Content Management Component that provides
the ability to create and manage Burlen’s
complete product range online. The new web site also offers a much richer browsing
experience for users with part images and exploded diagrams for each carburetter
they manufacture. The system also provides a data link to Burlen’s business
system so parts
& pricing are automatically synchronised, reducing the total cost of ownership.
Other features include secure pages for collection of payment details, fully
integrated parts, products and carburetter management including bill of materials
creation to
allow different parts to be mapped to carburetters. Also features real-time order
tracking and processing, dynamic news, FAQ’s and
links sections, a built-in image bank, contact management, car and manufacturer
system, lookup list data management, event and user access management and also
a MIS (Management Information System) interface with provides a graphical presentation
of online orders.
Technology:
The system is build using a customised version of Sourcewrite’s Web Substance
, our bespoke Content Management Component. Sourcewrite used the flat format
data from the legacy web site and shaped and cleaned this to suit the new relational
database
schema. Sourcewrite then cross matched this data against Burlen’s business system
(Dataflair’s DIBS) to produce up-to-date data and
then we created scripts to perform this task as part of a routine synchronisation
process.
Benefits:
This has lead to Burlen’s product range being accurately represented online which now provides a hub of technical information for
classic car carburetters. The resigned interface is more ecstatically pleasing and the new system allows Burlen complete control
over the content of their web site without the need for any web design skills.
Cost of Similar System:
Approximate Cost Between £7000 - £9000
